Liverpool’s young star Rio Ngumoha confessed he was left “speechless” after receiving his first senior England cap from Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, following a dream debut for the Three Lions. The 17-year-old winger made his first appearance for the senior side as a second-half substitute during England’s pre-World Cup friendly win over New Zealand, marking the culmination of a breakout season with a memorable international bow.

Bellingham applauds Ngumoha’s potential

After England’s 1-0 triumph at the Raymond James Stadium, Bellingham stepped up in the dressing room to honour the team’s newest debutant. The Real Madrid star, who had just made his return from injury and played a key role in lifting England’s intensity, presented Ngumoha with his first senior cap and offered heartfelt words about the youngster’s bright future.

Bellingham said: “Congratulations on an amazing debut. I think we all enjoyed watching it, and obviously you’re going to have a really bright future at your club and hopefully with us as well. It’s a pleasure to give it [the cap] to you because I know there’ll be so many more. So, congratulations.” A visibly emotional Ngumoha could only respond modestly: “Thank you everyone. I’m happy. I’m speechless! I just want to say thank you. We keep going!”

Tuchel voices frustration despite individual success

Although the occasion was a personal triumph for Ngumoha, England manager Thomas Tuchel expressed dissatisfaction with the overall team performance. As he continues preparations for the 2026 World Cup in North America, the German coach criticised the lack of tactical discipline in the first half, calling the play “freestyle football” that strayed from his planned structure. Despite the victory, Tuchel urged his side to tighten their organisation ahead of the tournament opener against Croatia.

Ngumoha was joined in the senior squad by other young prospects including Alex Scott, Josh King, and Ethan Nwaneri. The Liverpool winger earned his selection after a season in which he featured 29 times for the Reds, though he has not yet secured a spot in the final 26-man squad for the tournament. Veteran goalkeeper Jordan Pickford praised the teenager’s composure, saying: “He was quality, nothing fazed him. He’s had a really good season at Liverpool and the manager gave him his debut and he showed how good he is.”

Bayern Munich eyeing Liverpool’s rising star

Ngumoha’s swift ascent has drawn significant interest from abroad. Reports suggest that Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich are considering a move to lure the winger from Anfield. The Bundesliga powerhouse has identified the 17-year-old as a prime candidate to strengthen their left wing as they look to inject youth into their attack. However, Liverpool are expected to mount a strong resistance, viewing Ngumoha as central to their long-term vision under new head coach Andoni Iraola, particularly after Mohamed Salah’s departure.

Adapting to Florida’s heat

The friendly in Tampa provided an important test of physical endurance for the squad, with Tuchel noting the challenges of playing under the intense Florida sun. The manager emphasised that such experiences were vital for preparing the team to handle the expected climatic conditions during the World Cup. England will now travel to Orlando for their final warm-up match against Costa Rica.

“We had one training in the sun and now this match felt really, really odd,” Tuchel admitted. “But it’s good that we’re exposed because that’s why we’re here. We wanted it that way and we need to get used to it because it will come at some point.” For Ngumoha, adapting to these demanding conditions during his first senior camp has been an invaluable learning curve as he aims to cement his place in England’s senior setup for future tournaments.
