According to reports, Oliver Glasner is poised to take charge as AC Milan’s next head coach after reaching a preliminary agreement with the club. The Austrian manager is said to be planning a key defensive signing to reinforce the squad — Real Madrid’s David Alaba.

As per Corriere dello Sport, detailed discussions were held last Monday between Milan officials and the 51-year-old Glasner, and the talks reportedly went very smoothly.

For Glasner, managing in Milan — often referred to as the fashion capital — represents a dream opportunity. The former Eintracht Frankfurt and Crystal Palace boss is believed to have deliberately rejected other managerial offers to pursue this role.

Among those who were also keen to secure Glasner’s services was Dutch powerhouse Feyenoord Rotterdam. However, they were ultimately left disappointed as the Austrian seemed determined to head to Italy.

The final decision on Glasner’s appointment now lies with Milan’s owner Gerry Cardinale and club adviser Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

While the deal has not been finalized yet, Cardinale and Ibrahimovic’s approval will be the decisive step. Once they give their consent, the appointment is expected to be confirmed.

Glasner is admired for his energetic, high-pressing system that emphasizes quick ball recovery and an aggressive tempo — a stark contrast to Milan’s recent conservative gameplay under Massimiliano Allegri.

This approach represents a clear shift from Allegri’s defence-oriented tactics, which many felt hindered the team’s progress and ultimately cost Milan a place in the Champions League last season. Glasner’s mission is now to awaken the sleeping giant and restore Milan among Europe’s elite clubs.

Reports indicate that Glasner is eager to bring David Alaba to San Siro as part of his rebuilding plan.

As per Gazzetta dello Sport, the Austrian coach is determined to sign his compatriot, the captain of the Austrian national team, to strengthen Milan’s backline.

Currently with Real Madrid, Alaba is viewed as the ideal candidate to lead Milan’s defence. However, the potential move comes with some concern — the 31-year-old has struggled with major injuries since the 2023/24 season, including a torn cruciate ligament and recurring muscle and meniscus problems.

Despite these setbacks, Glasner remains confident in Alaba’s ability, believing that his vast international experience and leadership qualities make the risk worthwhile.

Reports further suggest that Alaba may be open to leaving Madrid, with his representatives allegedly offering him to several clubs. Interestingly, Milan’s city rivals Inter Milan are also said to have been approached, according to La Gazzetta.

Meanwhile, AC Milan is reportedly planning a wider restructuring that goes beyond the managerial appointment. Behind the scenes, discussions about sweeping personnel and organisational changes are underway. Corriere dello Sport also notes that Austrian national team coach Ralf Rangnick remains linked to a possible technical director role at the club.
