Manchester United have officially confirmed that Jadon Sancho has left the club as a free agent following the conclusion of his contract. The winger, who joined with high expectations of becoming a world-class star, exits Old Trafford after a turbulent five years in which he struggled to reproduce the dazzling form that made him a standout performer in the Bundesliga.
End of the road for Sancho
The Red Devils have announced that their retained list has been submitted to the Premier League, marking the end of several notable stints at the club. Sancho’s departure closes a chapter that cost United over £73 million, ultimately proving to be one of their most expensive missteps. The winger faced persistent challenges with form and consistency, as well as clashes with previous management. Alongside Sancho, the exits of Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia have also been made official.
In a formal statement, the club said: “Jadon Sancho arrived at Old Trafford in 2021 and was part of the 2023 Carabao Cup-winning team. The winger made 83 appearances for Manchester United before returning to Borussia Dortmund on loan and later spending temporary spells with Chelsea and Aston Villa.
“Everyone at the club would like to thank Casemiro, Tyrell, and Jadon for their contributions to Manchester United and wish them the best of luck for the future.”
The 26-year-old forward, who managed just 12 goals and six assists across all competitions during his five years with United, will now look to begin a new chapter in his career.
“The most disappointing signing”
Sancho’s time at Old Trafford has attracted sharp criticism from several former players, with Louis Saha describing the England international as “the most disappointing signing in Manchester United history.” Saha expressed his disbelief at Sancho’s struggles in the Premier League, saying: “The level he showed at Borussia Dortmund before joining was extraordinary — he had so much promise because he is an enormous talent. It felt like a mystery.”
The former French striker further reflected on the missed potential, adding: “I was privileged to be a footballer and suffered many injuries, and I wish I could have played the number of games that Sancho has played at his age with his talent. I really hoped he would flourish at Old Trafford because he can do everything — he can produce moments of brilliance. It’s a real shame to see his opportunities go to waste.”
Dortmund return in sight?
Despite his struggles in English football, Sancho continues to hold a strong reputation in Germany. Reports indicate that the winger is open to a third stint with Borussia Dortmund as he attempts to revive his career, which has stalled since 2021. Head coach Niko Kovac is said to have approved a potential move.
Sancho’s most productive spell came at Signal Iduna Park, where he notched 114 goal involvements in only 137 matches during his initial stay. He returned to the club on loan in 2024, playing a key role in helping them reach the Champions League final at Wembley. A permanent return to the Bundesliga could offer the confidence boost he needs to re-establish himself in the England national team, having not featured for the Three Lions since the end of 2021.
Reshaping Manchester United
Sancho is among several senior players leaving Old Trafford as Manchester United look to restructure the squad and manage their finances. Midfielder Casemiro and defender Tyrell Malacia will also depart at the expiry of their contracts. Casemiro, who joined from Real Madrid, leaves after four seasons in which he helped the club lift both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.
Malacia’s exit follows an injury-plagued period that limited him to just 50 appearances after joining from Feyenoord in 2022. As the club transitions into a new era under its current sporting leadership, the departures of high earners such as Sancho and Casemiro will free up significant space in the wage structure, paving the way for fresh signings in the upcoming transfer window.
