Addressing the reduction in the annual quota of subsidized cylinders from nine to four under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri stated on Wednesday that the move was prompted by the misuse of subsidized cylinders by some beneficiaries.
Puri explained that the decision was based on evidence indicating that many beneficiaries did not require additional cylinders and that some were being used for commercial purposes. He said, "Since this morning, there has been much discussion about our decision to reduce the number of Ujjwala cylinders from nine to four. But if you do not need more than four cylinders, why would you require any more?"
**'No Need for More Cylinders'**
Puri argued that if a family does not require more than four cylinders a year, there is no valid reason to provide them with additional subsidized refills. He told IANS, "We took this step because we received reliable information that many of our Ujjwala beneficiaries did not actually need the cylinders. They were obtaining the cylinders and either selling them for commercial use, using them elsewhere, or reselling them at a higher price."
**Cases of Misuse Identified**
Puri stated that the government made this decision after analyzing how the scheme was being utilized and identifying instances of misuse. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched to provide clean cooking fuel to economically weaker families by offering LPG connections and refills at subsidized rates.
**Praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Governance**
Puri also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's governance model, stating that the opposition should understand and adopt the development-centric approach championed by the Prime Minister. According to the Minister, voters have repeatedly supported the BJP under Prime Minister Modi's leadership because they view the administration as a government that delivers development and executes work at the grassroots level.
