Trees may have more fruits and flowers due to drought! Know the interesting story of ‘stress fruiting’

Many things happen in nature, which even man is amazed. One of them is ‘Stress Fruiting’. When a tree experiences drought, lack of water, extreme heat or other environmental stress, it suddenly begins to produce more flowers and fruit than usual. Although this may seem surprising on the surface, there is a very clever mechanism of nature at work behind it.

Plants do not have brains like humans, but their cells have the ability to sense changes in the environment. Changes such as loss of soil moisture, increase in temperature or lack of nutrients are sensed by the roots and leaves of plants. Various chemical messengers are then activated in the plant body. Due to this, the tree needs to ‘know’ that adverse conditions may arise in the future.

At such a time the tree takes an important decision to sustain its existence. If the situation worsens and the tree dies, it starts producing flowers and fruits in abundance to ensure that the next generation survives. This process is called ‘stress fruiting’. The seeds in the fruit can produce new plants and thus the survival of the species.

Some farmers take advantage of the natural process of ‘stress fruiting’ in agriculture. Before fruit set, plants are subjected to a period of controlled water deficit, which sensitizes the plant to adverse conditions. At such times the tree tries to produce more flowers and fruits for its existence. This method is used to some extent in crops such as mango, pomegranate, citrus fruits and grapes. But it is very important to apply this stress in a controlled and scientific manner, otherwise the plants may be damaged. Proper water management under the guidance of agricultural experts can increase yield and improve fruit quality. Therefore, stress fruiting is considered as an important concept for more efficient farming using nature’s cues.

‘Stress Fruiting’ is a wonderful story of the struggle for survival in nature and the effort to keep the next generation safe. Although trees do not speak, their actions are a living testimony of nature’s intelligence.
