To deal with the increasing traffic jams and road chaos in the capital Delhi, the government is soon going to implement the state-of-the-art Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). After getting approval from the Home Ministry, the project is now awaiting the final approval of the Cabinet. According to officials, this system can be completely launched in the next three years.

Traffic system will change with AI and IoT

ITMS will work on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) based technology. Smart cameras and sensors installed on major routes and intersections of the city will do real-time analysis of the number of vehicles and traffic pressure. Based on this, the timing of traffic signals will be determined automatically, which is expected to reduce unnecessary interruptions and jams.

E-challan will be generated as soon as rules are broken

Under the new system, in case of overspeeding, red light jumping and other traffic rule violations, the cameras will immediately recognize the number plate of the vehicle and automatically issue e-challan. All data will be available live in a central command centre, allowing quick action in case of an accident or emergency. This technology will also play an important role in preparing green corridors for ambulances.

Slow pace of ‘Operation Sangam’

Under ‘Operation Sangam’, which was launched in February with the aim of making Delhi jam-free, the traffic police is working with RWAs and market associations to find solutions. However, till now its results have not been visible at the expected level.

50 VMS boards upgraded

To strengthen smart traffic management, 50 out of 92 Variable Message Sign (VMS) boards in the city have been upgraded. These boards are now providing drivers with important information like real-time traffic jams, route diversions, accident alerts, weather information and estimated travel time.

Big challenge still remains

Experts believe that till the full implementation of ITMS, it will be challenging to bring about comprehensive improvements in Delhi’s traffic system. However, the current steps can prove to be a strong foundation for a smart and smooth transportation system of the future.
