The Liverpool No.7 played a key role in Germany’s opening goal of the tournament, just six minutes into the Group E match in Houston.
Wirtz – who played the full match – provided the assist for Felix Nmecha’s goal with a clever pass as the pair completed an excellent one-two combination.
Livano Comenencia equalised for Curacao midway through the first half, but a Nico Schlotterbeck header and a Kai Havertz penalty gave Germany a two-goal advantage by halftime.
Jamal Musiala’s low strike added a fourth goal for Germany immediately after the restart, before Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav also found the net.
Havertz’s second goal of the match completed the scoring late in the game.
Germany’s next World Cup fixture is against Ivory Coast in Toronto on Saturday (June 20).
