Antoine Semenyo was honoured with FIFA’s Player of the Match award after playing a pivotal role in Ghana’s thrilling 1-0 victory over Panama, a result that keeps England’s World Cup Group L opponents firmly in the qualification race.
The Black Stars left it late, with Caleb Yirenkyi netting a dramatic winner in the 95th minute, ensuring Ghana claimed all three points. The result sees them draw level with England at the top of the group ahead of a highly anticipated clash between the two nations.
Semenyo sparks Ghana’s late breakthrough
Ghana appeared destined for a frustrating draw as Panama controlled long stretches of the game. However, their perseverance paid off deep into stoppage time when Yirenkyi struck in the fifth added minute. Abdul Fatawu delivered the crucial pass after a clever move started by Semenyo, whose tireless energy and creativity from the right flank consistently troubled Panama’s defence.
The hard-fought win propelled Ghana into second place in Group L, level on points with England, while Panama were left ruing missed opportunities after dictating much of the play.
Semenyo reflects on emotional victory
The Manchester City forward was later named Player of the Match and admitted that the late winner made the moment even more special. He praised his teammates’ persistence against a physically strong Panama side.
“Ninety minutes plus five... I don’t even know how to describe that emotion,” Semenyo told FIFA. “We were all so relieved because we knew how vital this game was for us, and it gives us great confidence heading into the next match.”
“They [Panama] had some really big lads, to be fair, but we enjoy that kind of physical battle. That’s what drives us, and I thought it was a great contest today. I’m thrilled we got the win, but now we’ve got to stay focused. Two huge games are still ahead of us.”
‘They’re my friends, but...’
Next up for Ghana is a crunch meeting against England, where Semenyo will square off against familiar faces from Manchester City and the Premier League. Despite the friendships, he was clear that all camaraderie will be put aside once the match kicks off.
“It’s going to be really tough, and that’s why we needed this win to build momentum and confidence heading into the next round,” he said. “This team has talent and something to prove — that’s our motivation.”
“Of course, they’re my friends and there’s mutual respect, but now it’s time to focus. We joked around before the World Cup, but that’s over. I won’t be messaging anyone from the England squad — if they text me, I’ll reply — but this is serious business now.”
England challenge on the horizon
Ghana will now turn their attention to their upcoming fixture against England in Boston. A win over the Three Lions would seal their place in the last 32 with one match still to play. After their dramatic triumph against Panama, the Black Stars approach what promises to be their toughest Group L test brimming with belief and determination.
