Spain’s head coach Luis de la Fuente has responded strongly to criticism following his team’s 0-0 draw against Cape Verde.

The Spanish press has questioned de la Fuente’s tactical choices, particularly his decision to start Gavi and Ferran Torres on the wings and his delay in making substitutions until the 71st minute, even as Spain searched for a breakthrough goal.

Several key players have also faced scrutiny, most notably Ballon d’Or winner and Manchester City midfielder Rodri. Some commentators have accused him of slowing down the team’s tempo during play.

Speaking before Spain’s second match against Saudi Arabia, de la Fuente hit back at those claims. He said, “I find it deeply disrespectful when people say such things about the best player in the world, Rodri. Would anyone make such comments about other players who are considered the best globally? I don’t think they would dare.”

He continued, “But because they’re Spanish, we tend to criticise our own in ways we wouldn’t others. Rodri is the best player in the world. Even at 50%, he is better than most midfielders anywhere. He offers clarity, vision, and balance. Rodri is a source of inspiration for us.”

Addressing questions about his squad selection, de la Fuente added, “In the last European Championship [which Spain won in 2024], Dani Olmo joined the squad despite being injured. He could have stayed at home, but we chose to take a chance on him. Olmo recovered and ended up as the top scorer. People may have forgotten that now, but I remember.”
