Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has lavished praise on Cristiano Ronaldo, calling his captain an "exemplary" leader following Portugal’s commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the World Cup. The Al-Nassr forward struck twice, delivering a statement performance that silenced critics who had questioned his place in the squad amid a week of intense scrutiny and external pressure.

Following Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo in their opening match, Ronaldo described the subsequent days as a "dark week", as both fans and analysts debated whether the 41-year-old should continue to feature in Martinez’s starting eleven. However, after the emphatic win over Uzbekistan, Martinez addressed the criticism directed at both Ronaldo and the team.

"It was a very difficult week, with unfair noise," Martinez said. "We didn’t get the result we wanted against DR Congo, and that created a tough environment because there was a lot of noise — unfair, fake news, and even malicious commentary. After a result like that, it’s easy to make excuses or lose focus, but our players stayed committed and showed an incredible attitude."

Highlighting Ronaldo’s leadership, Martinez emphasised that the forward’s contribution went beyond his two goals. The coach explained that the veteran’s mindset and professionalism played a crucial role in maintaining unity within the squad. "We were angry, we felt hurt, but the result came from growing as a team, improving our emotional control during World Cup matches, and staying true to our identity for the full 90 minutes," Martinez said. "Cristiano was an exemplary captain — focused on what he could control and using his vast experience. It wasn’t only about the two goals; it was about his movement, the spaces he created for teammates, his discipline, and his role as a reference point in our attacking structure."

Addressing the constant comparisons between Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, Martinez preferred to concentrate on Ronaldo’s unique impact on Portugal’s campaign. "They are players who transformed football and pushed each other to greater heights through their rivalry," he said. "As for our captain, he’s an icon — playing in his sixth World Cup — but also a model professional who embodies what it means to represent Portugal. I’m very happy for him because he deserves this success, but I also know he’s already recovering and preparing for the next match. That humility and focus are what make him truly special."

Martinez concluded by stressing that Ronaldo’s physical workload is being carefully managed to ensure he remains at his best, with Portugal preparing for their final group-stage clash against Colombia this weekend. "He’s a player who plays every match for his club and has logged a lot of minutes this season, but he’s still very fresh. We manage him game by game, training by training, evaluating everything," the coach said. "Today, his positioning caused real problems for Uzbekistan’s defence — they had to constantly readjust. When he’s in that kind of form, we simply have to make the most of him."
