Jude Bellingham has expressed his thoughts on Jose Mourinho’s dramatic appointment as Real Madrid’s new manager, while also commenting on the club’s early summer transfer activity. The England midfielder, currently starring at the 2026 World Cup, discussed how the “Special One” is already shaping his squad at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Excitement over Mourinho’s comeback

Following England’s goalless draw against Ghana at the 2026 World Cup, Bellingham reflected on his club situation at Real Madrid. The young midfielder was full of praise for the decision to reappoint Mourinho, whose return to the Spanish capital has created a huge buzz in world football. Speaking about the chance to work under one of football’s most decorated coaches, Bellingham made his excitement clear.

“Mourinho is a top, top coach. I’m very happy,” the 22-year-old said after the match. His positive comments come as reports suggest Mourinho has been given an unusually high degree of authority over transfers at the Bernabeu.

Bellingham backs Madrid’s summer recruitment

Real Madrid have been particularly busy in the early weeks of the summer transfer period, moving away from their youth-oriented approach to recruit experienced professionals. The club has already wrapped up signings for Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, and Ibrahima Konate. Bellingham acknowledged that this wave of new arrivals will bring a fresh energy and experience to the dressing room he will return to after the World Cup in North America.

“We made some great signings as well, a lot of signings, with a lot of quality and experience. I’ll be very happy to work with them. Right now I’m focused on England, but I really like the signings they’re making,” Bellingham remarked.

Frustration in Boston and England’s World Cup challenge

Though Bellingham’s club prospects look bright, his immediate attention remains fixed on England’s World Cup campaign. Despite being named Player of the Match in the 0-0 stalemate with Ghana, the Real Madrid playmaker provided a modest and candid reflection on his performance. He said the honour should have gone to one of Ghana’s defenders for their strong showing against Thomas Tuchel’s side. “I didn’t deserve it, to be honest,” he admitted. “Had a couple of moments, it was hard to get into the game and I’m grateful for whoever voted, but it probably should have gone to one of their lads who defended so well. So fair play to them.”

A lighter side amid World Cup tension

Beyond the discussions about Mourinho and England’s frustrations, Bellingham also offered insight into the broader World Cup atmosphere. When asked about his fellow star Kylian Mbappe, who has been in superb form, Bellingham simply described the Frenchman’s displays as “Top!” The conversation then turned to Spain, where Bellingham has become a fan favourite since moving from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid.

When questioned about whether Spain were favourites to win the tournament, Bellingham responded with humour. “A lot. I love Spain,” he said with a smile. “Oh, you mean the national team? [Laughs] They are very good, but the country is better. I love it.” While clearly enjoying his life in Madrid, his immediate focus remains on helping England overcome Panama as they aim to progress to the Round of 32.
