As part of OneFootball’s collaboration series with Shoot Music, we’re speaking with artists about their passion for football. Over the coming weeks, the focus will shift entirely to the World Cup.

Today’s feature highlights multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer, and devoted New Zealand supporter Jordan Rakei.

How are you feeling after New Zealand’s opening games against Iran and Egypt?

Honestly, a mix of emotions. Leading twice and only managing a draw against Iran was disappointing. We could almost taste victory, but it slipped away—especially being a lower-ranked side in the tournament. It’s frustrating not to have held on to that win!

The 3-1 loss to Egypt brought us back to earth. After the first match, there was a glimmer of hope, but it faded quickly. Now, all that’s left is to defeat one of the tournament favourites, and we’ll be back in the mix!

How do you rate your chances of reaching the knockout stage before the final Group G match against Belgium?

It’s not looking too promising right now, but that’s often the story for New Zealand fans at football World Cups. Still, I’m proud that we’ve made it to the tournament—it’s an achievement in itself!

What’s your favourite World Cup memory as a New Zealand fan?

Definitely 2010. It was incredible being the only unbeaten team in that World Cup—even the eventual champions lost a game! That’s been our badge of honour ever since.

If New Zealand are to progress to the knockouts, which player do you think will be crucial in the final group fixture?

It’s got to be Chris Wood. He’s our most experienced player, and this could be his last World Cup, so he’ll want to make it count. He was brilliant against Iran—his link-up play and strength were exceptional. Everything on the pitch seemed to revolve around him.

Who do you think will win the World Cup?

I’d say France or Argentina. It could be a symbolic ‘passing of the torch’ moment from Messi to Mbappé. Both sides play thrilling football. England and Germany, though, could spring a surprise—they’re definite dark horses!
