Tottenham Hotspur have officially announced the signing of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes in a landmark transfer worth £85 million. The 21-year-old Portugal international joins the north London club as their most expensive purchase to date, though that record may soon be surpassed with further reinforcements expected.
Spurs win race for West Ham star
Tottenham acted swiftly to secure one of the Premier League’s most sought-after young players, beating competition from Manchester United to complete the deal. The move, valued at an impressive £85 million, demonstrates the club’s strong intent under head coach Roberto De Zerbi and the current management structure.
Sharing his thoughts with Spurs’ official website, Fernandes said: “I’m thrilled to take this next step. Spurs is a huge club, and the Head Coach played a major role in my decision. Our conversations were special because we view football the same way — as a team that fights with energy and determination to win every match. I can’t wait to begin, meet the fans, and give everything for this club.”
De Zerbi and Lange praise ‘exceptional’ midfielder
The signing of the Portuguese midfielder has been met with strong approval from Tottenham’s leadership. Sporting Director Johan Lange praised Fernandes, saying he possesses the “talent, mentality and work ethic to become a vital player for both the present and the future of Tottenham Hotspur,” and emphasised his composure in demanding situations.
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi also shared his admiration: “I’ve followed Mateus for quite some time because he blends technical quality with the intensity and intelligence needed for our style of football. Even at a young age, he already brings valuable Premier League experience and has displayed consistency and quality. Mateus is composed under pressure, moves the ball well, works tirelessly for the team, and shows courage when the game gets tough. I believe Tottenham offers the perfect environment for his continued growth, and I’m eager to start working with him.”
Fernandes’ record fee may soon be surpassed by Tonali
Although Fernandes currently holds the record as Tottenham’s most expensive signing — surpassing the £65 million paid for Dominic Solanke — his place at the top may not last long. Reports suggest Spurs are close to finalising a monumental deal for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali that could exceed the Fernandes fee.
The north London club are believed to have agreed terms to bring the former AC Milan star for a potential £100 million. The Italy international is expected to command an initial £92.5 million payment, with additional bonuses linked to Champions League qualification. This move would inject world-class quality into Tottenham’s midfield ahead of the new season.
Midfield transformation underway in north London
The acquisitions of Fernandes and Tonali signal a major reshaping of Tottenham’s midfield. Fernandes joins a squad that has already welcomed Jan Paul van Hecke for £52 million earlier in the window. These marquee additions will strengthen a group that already includes Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Archie Gray.
Fernandes arrives with an impressive record, having finished joint-fifth in the Premier League for most tackles (103) last season with West Ham. A graduate of Sporting CP’s academy, he previously registered six goal contributions at Southampton before winning West Ham’s Goal of the Season award last year — underlining his reputation as a complete, all-around midfielder ready to excel at the highest level.
