The much-anticipated battle of the night lived up to its billing as Austria’s Konrad Laimer faced off against Spain’s Lamine Yamal in their Round of 32 encounter. The duel between the Bayern Munich full-back and the teenage Spanish sensation was one of the major talking points heading into the match.

In terms of flair and confidence, Yamal appeared to have the upper hand. If one were to judge purely by the number of nutmegs, the Barcelona winger would be the clear winner. The 18-year-old managed to nutmeg Laimer three times in the first half alone, leaving the Austrian star looking somewhat outmatched by his much younger opponent.

However, the statistics tell a more balanced story. Despite Spain’s comfortable 3–0 victory over Austria, Yamal succeeded in only 38 percent of his individual duels. Laimer, on the other hand, won 57 percent of his challenges. Yet, those numbers are unlikely to offer much consolation to the Austrian after his team’s defeat.

Spain’s commanding performance saw them advance to the next round, while Austria bowed out after a spirited campaign. For Yamal, this outing further underlined his growing reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young footballers, capable of dazzling even the most seasoned defenders.
