Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar is finally fit to play an entire 90 minutes at the World Cup. The Italian manager also acknowledged that the country’s all-time leading goalscorer is not pleased with his current substitute role.
Neymar overcomes calf injury
The Brazilian talisman is set to play a bigger part in the tournament after fully recovering from a persistent right calf problem. The 34-year-old forward has endured a difficult campaign so far, featuring for only 14 minutes as a substitute during the group-stage win over Scotland. However, Ancelotti’s latest update has cleared any lingering doubts about his match fitness, offering the Selecao a crucial attacking boost ahead of their upcoming clash against Norway in New Jersey.
Manager assesses fitness progress
Speaking to Folha de S.Paulo, Ancelotti provided a detailed insight into Neymar’s current condition and attitude while being on the sidelines.
When asked whether he intended to keep Neymar as an option for extra time—similar to the approach used against Japan—Ancelotti highlighted the forward’s experience and ability to influence matches.
He said, “The key thing is that he is available to play. How long he will play, nobody knows. He has the experience to manage his time on the pitch and control the rhythm of the game. When I feel the team needs him, I will bring him on.”
The former Real Madrid boss was then questioned about Neymar’s ability to complete a full match. He responded confidently, “Yes. He can play 90 minutes.”
Neymar’s reaction to bench role
When discussing the emotional side of a star player being left on the bench, Ancelotti commended Neymar’s professionalism and attitude. “He is not happy, but he is behaving very well,” he said.
“He has been training excellently. Neymar is respectful, friendly, and admired by his teammates. He plays a key role in the group because he brings immense talent and great humility. I’m very happy with him. Naturally, he wants to play, as he always has.”
Asked whether Neymar had directly requested to start, Ancelotti explained, “He doesn’t explicitly say ‘I want to play,’ but it’s obvious that he wants to. And that’s a positive thing. No player can be happy sitting on the bench.”
Exciting knockout clash ahead
Brazil will face a tough challenge in the round of 16 against an in-form Norway team powered by prolific striker Erling Haaland. The Selecao are unbeaten in their last seven matches across all competitions, with Vinicius Junior in outstanding form. To secure a quarter-final spot, Ancelotti’s side will need to counter Norway’s physical aerial strength while making the most of Neymar’s creativity whenever he takes the field.
