A World Cup quarter-final spot will be decided at Houston Stadium as Canada face Morocco in a round-of-16 clash that brings together the current and future World Cup co-hosts. The winner will progress to play either France or Paraguay in the last eight.
Jesse Marsch’s Canadian team advanced to the second knockout round after finishing second in Group A and defeating South Africa in their first knockout fixture.
Meanwhile, Morocco – who will co-host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal – finished runners-up in Group C before stunning the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shootout.
But who will be in charge of refereeing this high-stakes encounter in Texas?
English referee Michael Oliver has been appointed to officiate this match. He is one of only two English referees selected for this World Cup, alongside Anthony Taylor.
The experienced Premier League official initially missed his first match assignment at this year’s tournament – a Group E fixture between Ivory Coast and Ecuador – due to injury.
However, Oliver soon returned to action, taking charge of two group stage games involving France and Norway, as well as overseeing the Netherlands’ match against Sweden.
This is not Oliver’s first taste of World Cup action. He previously officiated at the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where he refereed two group stage matches and Brazil’s quarter-final defeat to Croatia, which was decided by penalties.
At 41 years old, Oliver has officiated in 812 competitive matches across his career, including fixtures in the UEFA Champions League and two FA Cup finals in England.
He also holds the distinction of being the youngest referee to take charge of a Premier League match, making his debut in August 2010 at just 25 years and 182 days old.
For the Canada vs Morocco fixture, Oliver will be supported by fellow Englishmen Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring as assistant referees. Dutch officials Danny Makkelie and Hessel Steegstra have been appointed as the fourth official and reserve assistant referee respectively.
The winner of this match will move on to play their quarter-final tie at Boston Stadium on 9 July.
