Cristiano Ronaldo tipped for Hollywood success in a way Lionel Messi never could, says Emmanuel Petit

Cristiano Ronaldo has always flourished under the glare of stadium floodlights, but his next chapter might unfold beneath the even more dazzling lights of Hollywood. Former France international Emmanuel Petit has suggested that the Portuguese legend possesses a charisma and presence that set him apart from his long-time rival, Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo backed for a career in films

In a recent discussion with Jackpot City Casino, Petit expressed his belief that Ronaldo is perfectly suited for a move into acting once he retires from football. The 1998 World Cup winner explained that Ronaldo’s self-confidence and love for attention make him an ideal fit for the entertainment industry—an opportunity that, in his view, not every footballing icon could embrace.

Petit elaborated on the contrasting personalities of the two all-time greats to make his point. “A Hollywood actor? Ronaldo can do anything he wants. It’s completely different for Lionel Messi. I don’t see Messi going into show business—he doesn’t like to talk or answer questions. He stays away from the spotlight, whereas Ronaldo enjoys being the centre of attention. I think Ronaldo could be an actor, definitely. But Messi, I can’t see it,” Petit remarked.

Different personalities, different futures

Messi has always been known for his quiet and reserved nature, allowing his performances on the pitch to speak for him. In contrast, Ronaldo has built a global brand that thrives on his personality, confidence, and marketability. Petit believes this difference in temperament is what could see the Al-Nassr forward thrive in Los Angeles, while the Inter Miami star would probably prefer to avoid the media-heavy world of cinema and publicity tours.

Even as Ronaldo nears the end of his footballing journey, his connection with the spotlight remains unbroken. Following Portugal’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, the 41-year-old was visibly emotional. Yet, his post-match reflections hinted that he continues to value the grandeur of the stage, even as he ponders his future.

Petit’s concerns about the World Cup’s direction

Beyond his comments on Ronaldo’s post-football prospects, Petit also raised concerns regarding the future of international football tournaments. He questioned the sustainability of FIFA’s World Cup hosting cycle, particularly beyond the 2034 edition scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia. The former midfielder expressed doubt about the governing body’s efforts to expand football into regions where the sport is not deeply rooted.

“The biggest problem now is who will host the World Cup after Saudi Arabia?” Petit questioned. “Who has the financial capacity to organise it using public funds? FIFA is trying hard to convince India and China to embrace football, but it’s not part of their sporting culture. Cricket remains the dominant sport in India, and football has never taken off there. In China, players rarely move abroad. That’s the real question—what happens after 2034?”

What lies ahead for CR7?

Whether Ronaldo heads to Hollywood or continues in football, his next steps remain a talking point worldwide. Some even speculate he might transition into management. After Roberto Martinez’s departure, pundits like Jeff Stelling have jokingly suggested that Ronaldo could take charge of Portugal and still find a way to select himself for every game.

For now, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is enjoying a well-earned break with his family. Having confirmed that the 2026 World Cup was his last, the future remains wide open for one of football’s most iconic figures.
