Jordan Henderson has humorously reflected on the freak incident that left him with a broken arm, calling it “not my finest hour” after rejoining the England squad at the 2026 World Cup. The seasoned midfielder sustained the injury in bizarre fashion during the celebrations that followed the Three Lions’ dramatic round-of-16 triumph over Mexico.
Freak accident overshadows Mexico celebrations
Henderson shared details of the unfortunate mishap that sidelined him during the tournament. Although he did not feature in the 3-2 win against Mexico, the Brentford midfielder somehow managed to pick up both a yellow card and a serious injury after tumbling over advertising boards while celebrating with travelling fans. The impact was so severe that the 36-year-old had to be stretchered off while receiving oxygen at the Azteca Stadium.
Now back in camp with a protective cast, Henderson was spotted taking part in the warm-up ahead of England’s quarter-final meeting with Norway. Reflecting on the incident, he told ITV, “It’s alright, thanks. Not my finest hour but the main job was to go there and win and progress to the quarterfinal, and we managed to do that so that’s the main thing.”
He further added, “It’s been a bit of a tough couple of days but as soon as I came back to camp, seeing the lads, we’ve got a great medical team, I’m thankful for that.”
Surgery and recovery in Kansas City
The former Liverpool captain underwent surgery in Mexico City to treat the fracture before returning to England’s base. The injury caused significant distress to his family, particularly his father Brian, who spent a sleepless night awaiting updates. Expressing his appreciation to the specialists who treated him, Henderson said, “The doctors and surgeons in Kansas were amazing as well, so I’m very grateful for that, and just delighted to be part of the squad again today.”
Although Henderson has only played 12 minutes in the tournament so far—a short appearance in the 2-0 group-stage victory over Panama—manager Thomas Tuchel has chosen to keep the veteran midfielder within the squad for his leadership and experience.
Could Henderson make a return to the pitch?
Despite the seriousness of his injury, Henderson has not ruled out a potential comeback before the tournament ends. “We’ll cross that bridge if we come to it,” he remarked, suggesting that he is keeping the door open depending on his recovery progress.
His strong will to remain with the Three Lions has been supported by his family, who confirmed he has no plans to return home early. The midfielder continues to attend training sessions, cheering on his teammates from the sidelines while wearing his protective cast.
What’s next for England?
England secured a place in the World Cup semi-finals after a tough 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway, powered by a brace from Jude Bellingham. The Three Lions will now gear up for a challenging semi-final face-off against defending champions Argentina, scheduled for Wednesday in Atlanta.
