Aston Villa are on the verge of sealing an impressive deal to sign Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, effectively hijacking a move that Newcastle United once seemed certain to complete. The Swiss international is reportedly leaning towards a switch to Villa Park, with the transfer now being finalised ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Villa Overtake Magpies in Race for Manzambi
Aston Villa are finalising the signing of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, delivering a major setback to their Premier League rivals, Newcastle United.
Although Newcastle had earlier agreed on a package exceeding £50 million with Freiburg, the 20-year-old midfielder had not fully committed to the project at St James’ Park.
That moment of hesitation gave Villa the opening to accelerate their pursuit. According to reports from The Athletic, the Birmingham club intensified their efforts after receiving the devastating news that Amadou Onana suffered a knee ligament injury while representing Belgium at the 2026 World Cup. Manzambi is viewed as the ideal replacement, and with Villa set to feature in the Champions League next season, the prospect of top-tier European football has tilted the situation in their favour.
Newcastle Left Frustrated as Another Target Slips Away
The collapse of the deal has come as a major disappointment for Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, who has recently struggled to land marquee signings. The frustration among Newcastle supporters has grown, particularly after the club lost out to Liverpool in the race for Victor Munoz just last month.
Newcastle’s hierarchy made concerted efforts to secure Manzambi, holding direct negotiations with Freiburg and trying to persuade the player, his representatives, and his family that Tyneside would be the best place for his development. However, it now appears that Manzambi is set to join Aston Villa instead.
The Champions League Advantage
Despite Newcastle’s considerable financial resources, they were unable to offer what Manzambi values most—Champions League football. The lack of any European competition at St James’ Park has once again proved a stumbling block in their recruitment ambitions.
Manzambi had chosen to delay his decision until Switzerland’s World Cup campaign concluded, which happened on Saturday following their extra-time defeat to Argentina.
Rising Bundesliga and World Cup Star
Manzambi’s arrival marks the addition of one of Europe’s brightest young talents. During the 2025-26 season, he featured in 47 matches for Freiburg, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists as the club secured a seventh-place finish in the Bundesliga and reached the Europa League final. His standout performance against Aston Villa in that final reportedly caught the attention of manager Unai Emery.
His reputation soared further following a breakout showing at the World Cup in North America. Coming off the bench, Manzambi scored twice in the final 19 minutes of Switzerland’s 4-1 group-stage win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. He then netted again as a starter in the 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada, displaying his ability to shine on football’s biggest stage before Switzerland’s eventual quarter-final exit.
