The Government of India has unveiled a significant opportunity for scientists and researchers engaged in research and innovation. The Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education has launched a new initiative. The Prime Minister Research Chair Scheme 2026 aims to connect outstanding researchers of Indian origin working both domestically and internationally with leading universities and national research institutions in India. Selected candidates will receive access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, attractive financial support, academic freedom, and essential resources for their research.

This scheme will provide opportunities in several key areas of innovation and research, including health, engineering, science and technology, social sciences, and other innovation-driven fields. Researchers selected in these areas will have the chance to conduct advanced research and develop new solutions.

Under this fellowship, researchers and academicians can apply in three distinct categories based on their experience. The first category is for Young Researcher Fellows, where candidates who have completed their PhD and have less than five years of experience in research, teaching, or related fields can apply.

The second category is for Senior Fellows, open to candidates with 5 to less than 10 years of experience post-PhD. The third and highest category is the Research Chair, for those with over 10 years of experience after obtaining their PhD.

This fellowship lasts for approximately five years, allowing researchers to focus on their projects without interruptions. Selected scientists will have the opportunity to work in national laboratories such as IIT, IIMC, and CSIR. Additionally, they will receive research grants, fellowships, relocation support, and housing benefits.

The initiative aims to promote innovation and research in the country while strengthening high-level research.

Selected candidates will be provided with laboratory facilities, funding, and academic freedom for their research.

They will also have the chance to work in national laboratories and prominent institutions.

This fellowship offers the opportunity to collaborate with experts at both national and international levels.
