Ford Could Be Working on a Bronco Pickup to Take on the Jeep Gladiator: Report

The Ford Bronco family currently has only two models: the Bronco convertible SUV itself and the separate but popular compact crossover known as the Bronco Sport. There is also the Bronco New Energy EREV, but as it is sold only in China and developed in collaboration with a local brand, it is not being counted here. Even so, fresh reports indicate the range could expand in two directions—not only through a new Bronco family model, but also via a new Bronco-based truck that could support another brand’s line-up.

As per an August 19 report by Automotive News, which cited “people with knowledge of [Ford’s] future product plans,” Ford’s side of that expansion may come as a Bronco pickup truck. In theory, that vehicle would be a direct rival to the Jeep Gladiator, which carries forward the Wrangler’s off-road character and open-air appeal while also delivering most of the advantages of a mid-size pickup. Ford already offers a more conventional mid-size truck in the Ranger, but a Bronco pickup could appeal to buyers positioned between the brand’s adventure-focused SUV and its more utilitarian offering.

When Road & Track asked about the possibility of such a Bronco pickup, a Ford spokesperson issued this statement: “We are not going to comment on future product speculation, much of which is inaccurate. What we can say is Ford is focused on delivering a massive product renewal that will refresh 80 percent of our North American portfolio by volume by 2029. This includes the all-new Ford Fathom midsize pickup on the new Universal Electric Vehicle platform, alongside the next-generation F-150 and F-Series Super Duty.”

The other possible Bronco-related variant is said to be a Lincoln model, one that could take on dedicated luxury off-roaders such as the Lexus GX, Land Rover Defender and even the Mercedes G-Wagen by using the Bronco platform as the basis for a premium truck. This possibility was first reported in February, but a newer report from the Detroit Free Press says this product is now expected to arrive in 2029. Citing two sources “familiar with Ford’s product plans,” the Free Press report also points to a likely price: “just below” the current Lincoln Navigator’s starting price of around $90,000.

“Unfortunately, we do not speculate or comment on future product plans,” a Lincoln spokesperson told Road & Track in response to a request for further details.

If either of these rumoured future products does make it to market, they are expected to arrive within the next few years. The Lincoln is reported to be due in the summer of 2029, while Automotive News says the Bronco pickup is expected “near the end of the decade,” suggesting it would likely arrive at around the same time.
