A 72-year-old Brighton supporter has sadly died after falling ill outside the Amex Stadium following the match against Aston Villa.

Brighton and Hove Albion have confirmed the tragic death of a 72-year-old supporter, who passed away after becoming unwell shortly after Sunday’s win over Aston Villa. The fan was getting ready to board a supporters' bus when the incident took place, casting a sombre shadow over the opening weekend of the Premier League season at the Amex Stadium.

Tragic incident after Brighton victory

Brighton issued an official statement confirming that a supporter died shortly after the club recorded a 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday. The 72-year-old man collapsed in the coach park while leaving the Amex Stadium to make his journey home.

As per the club’s statement, emergency personnel rushed to the scene to provide immediate medical assistance. The tragic development overshadowed the celebratory mood that followed the impressive opening-day victory, which took Brighton to the top of the Premier League table. Medical staff spent a considerable amount of time trying to resuscitate the supporter before he was sadly declared dead at the scene.

Emergency services response detailed

In an official statement, Brighton described the efforts made by on-site medical staff and emergency responders to try to save the supporter’s life.

The statement read: "Following today’s game against Aston Villa, sadly a 72-year-old male Brighton & Hove Albion supporter passed away after the match. The gentleman took unwell as he was leaving the stadium to board a supporters’ club bus in the coach park. Despite the best efforts of emergency services and club staff, the medical team were unable to save him. South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedics, St John’s Ambulance, Sussex Police, MB Medical Solutions, the club’s crowd doctor and our stewards worked together to ensure the individual was given the best possible care, including prolonged CPR on the scene."

Paul Barber expresses club condolences

Paul Barber, Brighton’s chief executive and deputy chairman, spoke of the club’s deep sadness over the tragic incident. Barber underlined the sudden and heartbreaking nature of what happened, coming just as supporters were ending their matchday journey.

He said: "What should have been an ordinary and happy journey home ended in heartbreaking circumstances, and we are all shocked and saddened by the loss of one of our supporters. We extend our sincere condolences to the gentleman’s family and friends."
