Veteran player Lionel Messi retires from international football

New Delhi, 01 September 2026: Legendary footballer Lionel Messi today announced his retirement from international football. With this his 20-year career with Argentina has come to an end. During this period, he played a key role in leading Argentina to World Cup victory and two Copa America titles. Vikrami played 207 matches for Messi Argentina.

Messi had said that this decision was in his mind since the defeat against Spain in the World Cup final. The 39-year-old announced the decision in a statement on his official Instagram account, confirming that he would no longer be seen in the Argentina jersey after one of the greatest international careers in the history of football.

Messi said that the decision was extremely painful, especially because he has maintained an emotional connection with the national team and Argentina's supporters throughout his career. After years of defeat, he had given the World Cup title to his country in 2022.
