Messi retired from international football on Monday (31 August). 39-year-old Messi's last match for Argentina was the World Cup final, in which his team lost to Spain. Messi had earlier retired from international football in 2016 but soon changed his decision. He achieved many achievements in his 21-year journey on behalf of Argentina. 1: Messi has won the World Cup once in Qatar in 2022. During his tenure, Argentina's team reached the finals twice in 2014 and 2026, where it lost to Germany and Spain.

6: Messi has appeared in 6 World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026), which is the same as his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

21: Messi scored a total of 21 goals in six World Cups. He is second only to France's Kylian Mbappe, who has scored 22 goals in three World Cups.

39: Messi announced his retirement from international football at the age of 39. He retired 21 years after debuting for Argentina in August 2005 in a friendly match against Hungary. He was barely able to play a minute in that match. He was sent off the field for elbowing an opponent.

125: Messi has scored 125 goals in international football, more than double the number of goals scored by any other Argentinian player. The previous record was held by Gabriel Batistuta, who scored 54 goals in 78 matches from 1991 to 2002. The record for scoring most goals in men's international football is held in the name of Cristiano Ronaldo (146 goals). Messi's number comes after him.
