Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez made an expensive mistake as Real Madrid raced into an early 2-0 lead at the Santiago Bernabeu. Kylian Mbappe scored the opener before Federico Valverde robbed the Nerazzurri goalkeeper to extend Los Blancos' advantage in the Champions League clash.

Madrid punish Inter goalkeeper's error

Inter goalkeeper Martinez had a night to forget at the Santiago Bernabeu after a major blunder in their Champions League league-phase meeting with Real Madrid. The Nerazzurri were already behind early in the match before the Spanish goalkeeper gifted Los Blancos a comfortable two-goal advantage in front of the home crowd.

Valverde capitalises on dreadful defensive mistake

Los Blancos took the lead in the 14th minute when French forward Mbappe finished an incisive pass from Brahim Diaz to put the hosts in front.

Inter's problems deepened in the 23rd minute as they tried to build from the back. Martinez brought a pass under control right in front of his own goal, which allowed Federico Valverde to press him aggressively. The Madrid midfielder successfully dispossessed the Inter goalkeeper, with the ball then rolling straight into the net to double the Spanish giants' lead.

Los Blancos in control as game goes on

Madrid hold a commanding 2-0 advantage over Inter with the Champions League league-phase fixture still in progress at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Nerazzurri need a huge response and a dramatic tactical turnaround if they are to salvage a positive result from their trip to the Spanish capital. They must somehow find a route back into the contest despite the early setbacks.
