Joe Willock’s late strike sent a relieved Newcastle into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup as the Premier League side battled to a 1-0 win away to Championship team Millwall.

Moments before they went in front, the Magpies had been given a major scare when a shot from Tairyk Arconte came back off the post, with the home side at that stage looking capable of knocking out the competition’s winners from two seasons ago.

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle introduced Anthony Elanga and deadline-day signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo as he looked to finally produce the breakthrough.

However, it was Millwall substitute Arconte who came closest to opening the scoring in the 79th minute when he got away from Tino Livramento, only to see his effort rebound off the near post.

After surviving that warning, the visitors grabbed the winner with nine minutes remaining when Lewis Hall’s ball across the six-yard box was flicked home by Willock.

The Lions then sent on 15-year-old midfielder Regan Anderson, who became Millwall’s second-youngest player, during the remaining minutes, but Newcastle stayed strong to come through a hard-fought contest.

Willock’s flicked finish helped Newcastle progress.

Jorgen Strand Larsen scored twice as Crystal Palace moved into the fourth round with a 3-0 win over Middlesbrough at Selhurst Park.

Strand Larsen headed in once in each half before substitute Daichi Kamada chipped goalkeeper Sol Brynn for the third goal, with Palace showing their cutting edge in an entertaining tie that Middlesbrough largely controlled.

But after naming the Championship’s leading scorer Will Lankshear among the substitutes as both sides made eight changes, Boro did not have the attacking threat required to make the most of their impressive work in the final third.

Strand Larsen was on target as Palace advanced.

Ryan Christie hit a hat-trick to give Marco Rose his first win as Bournemouth manager as the Cherries defeated Championship side Lincoln 4-0.

The Scotland international starred for the home side with goals in the seventh, 69th and 88th minutes for the second hat-trick of his career, while Rayan came off the bench to complete the victory in stoppage time.

Christie bagged a hat-trick as Bournemouth progressed.

Chemsdine Talbi’s goal proved decisive as Sunderland secured a 1-0 victory over Hull.

Regis Le Bris made 11 changes to the side that drew with Brentford at the weekend, while Sergej Jakirovic also reshuffled his team, making eight alterations after their goalless draw against Aston Villa.

A drab meeting at the Stadium of Light between the two Premier League teams was eventually settled in the 71st minute when Talbi produced a chipped finish to put the Black Cats ahead.

Chemsdine Talbi scored for Sunderland.

Bradford reached the fourth round by beating Leyton Orient 3-1. Goals from Will Swan, Stephen Humphrys and Nick Powell were more than enough to cancel out a Macaulay Gillesphey own goal.
