Delhi University Class Promotion: Delhi University (DU) may change the credits required for promotion from one class to another in undergraduate courses. For this, DU has proposed to increase the credit requirement for a student to pass the first year of undergraduate courses and get promoted to the second year from 22 credits to 28 credits. This step has been taken to "align" with the student goals set in the National Education Policy (NEP).

This step has been taken to overcome the shortcomings of the NEP. Under this, there are seven papers in each semester, including four core subject-specific papers carrying four credits each and four additional papers General Elective, Value Added Course, Skill Enhancement Course, and Ability Enhancement Course. It has two credits in each semester.

The former exam controller, who was part of the 12-member committee formed by the university, said that if we go with 22 credits out of 44 as the basic requirements for a student to be promoted to the second year, a student who passes all subjects in the first semester will earn the required credits in the first semester itself and will not be as active in the second semester as he should be. This is why we have proposed to increase it to 28 credits so that students can perform well in enough discipline-specific (DSC) papers for the course they have chosen.

The minutes of the committee meeting said that however, there is no compulsion to take core academic subjects to obtain minimum credits to pass a semester. This is harming the academic development of students and defeating the goals set in NEP 2020. The committee's recommendations further said that the student should acquire at least 28 credits out of the total credits of both semesters to be promoted to the next year. However, students representing Delhi University in sports/extra-curricular activities/NCC/NSS, etc. may be exempted from this requirement subject to prior approval of the competent authority.
