In an ODI encounter, Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne made history by being the first cricket player to ever score fifty or more runs, take three wickets, and make four or more catches.

This was a feat Labuschagne achieved in Nottingham during the first ODI against England. Labuschagne claimed three wickets for 39 runs in six overs when England was batting. Ben Duckett, the captain Harry Brook, and Jofra Archer were all removed by him. When it came to the catches, Labuschagne used them to get rid of Adil Rashid, Duckett, Brook, and Jacob Bethell. Later, Labuschagne hit seven fours and two sixes on route to a batting total of 77 in 61 balls. His runs were scored at a 126.22 strike percentage.

Prior to the game, England chose to bat first after winning the toss. Ben Duckett, the first batsman for England, scored 95 runs in 91 balls with 11 fours, while Will Jacks, the second batsman, scored 62 runs in 56 balls with five fours and two sixes. Despite this, the other batsmen were unable to convert their starts into significant totals. A partnership of 120 runs was made by Jacks and Duckett for the second wicket.

Neither Harry Brook, the skipper (39 in 31 balls, two fours and three sixes), nor Jacob Bethell (35 in 34 balls, three fours and a six) were able to turn their cameos into significant blows. England had a good position at 213/2 at one stage but was bowled out for 315 runs.

Marnus Labuschagne (3/34) and Adam Zampa (3/49) were two of Australia’s best bowlers. Travis Head got two wickets as well. Australia’s spinners claimed nine wickets, one of which was taken by Matthew Short.

Travis unleashed his fury from one end of the run pursuit, resulting in the falls of captain Mitchell Marsh (10), Steve Smith (32) and Cameron Green (32). Head and Labuschagne had a 148-run partnership (with Head scoring 154* in 129 balls, 20 fours, and five sixes), allowing them to chase down the target in only 44 overs with seven wickets remaining.

Liam Livingstone, Bethell, and Matthew Potts each claimed a wicket.

Head was named “Player of the Match” in recognition of his overall performance.

Australia currently leads the five-match series 1-0.
