Food Warnings: 60 crore people are getting sick every year due to bad food; more than 4 lakh deaths

WHO Food Warnings: The World Health Organization (WHO) has given shocking statistics about unsafe food. It says that every year 60 crore cases of foodborne illnesses are reported and 4,20,000 people lose their lives. 70 percent of those who lose their lives are children under the age of five.

In fact, in a video message during the second Global Food Regulatory Summit held in Delhi, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday highlighted the role of food regulators in dealing with unsafe food. During this, Ghebreyesus said, “Our food systems are facing many challenges due to climate change, population growth, new technologies, globalization and industrialization.”

According to the WHO Director-General, more than 30 million people around the world cannot afford a nutritious diet. The food regulatory community has an important role to play in tackling these global challenges. He emphasized that cooperation is necessary to ensure safe food for all, as food systems transcend country borders and continents. Union Health Minister J P Nadda, Food Minister Prahlad Joshi, Health Secretary and FSSAI President Apoorva Chandra, among others, attended the event.
