The Malayalam film industry mourns the loss of legendary actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma , whose illustrious career spanned over six decades and left an indelible mark on Indian cinema . The 79-year-old had been under medical care in a Kochi hospital for several weeks. She had been battling age-related health issues, which eventually caused a steady deterioration in her condition.


Debuting in the late 1950s, she graced the screen in more than 700 films , becoming a beloved figure known for her roles as a mother and grandmother. Kaviyoor Ponnamma’s acting journey began on the stage before she transitioned to films, where her immense talent flourished. She went on to play the mother to some of Malayalam cinema’s most iconic actors, including Sathyan, Prem Nazir, Mammootty, Mohanlal , and Dileep. Her on-screen bond with Mohanlal, in particular, resonated deeply with audiences, solidifying her as a cherished maternal figure in his films.

After making her final screen appearance in 2022, the veteran actress stepped away from public life due to declining health.
