Trent Alexander-Arnold 'in $89m talks to buy French soccer club' as Liverpool ace 'wants takeover'

Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold has held talks over potentially taking over at the Ligue 1 club FC Nantes. Following in the footsteps of Kylian Mbappe, who owns second-tier French side Caen, it would be an interesting move.

According to the French outlet L'Equipe, conversations about a takeover have been held including the Liverpool player's father, though a deal "looks complicated". Alexander-Arnold is already a minority shareholder of the French Formula 1 team Alpine alongside Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and sports stars Rory McIlroy and Anthony Joshua.

French businessman Waldemar Kita currently owns Nantes, the club captained by the former Liverpool midfielder Pedro Chirivella. Kita, it is said, would be willing to sell the club because of difficulties with French soccer's TV rights and a struggle to build a new stadium, and that is where Alexander-Arnold, via an investment fund, comes in.

  • The takeover bid is said to amount to $112m (£84m/€100m), including a straight $89m (£67m/€80m) guaranteed plus a seller credit of $22m (£17m/€20m) accompanied by various bonuses of up to $45m (£34m/€40m). More meetings are supposedly set to take place in the coming days.

Kita wants to recoup most of what he spent on Nantes which could make it hard for Alexander-Arnold to get a deal over the line, the report states. Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) walked away from a deal to buy another French club, Bordeaux, earlier in the year.

Liverpool.com says: It would be really interesting to see what happened if Alexander-Arnold did take over at Nantes. The French market, largely thanks to the failed TV deal and relative lack of interest in the division from abroad, has really struggled in recent times, meaning prices for clubs have plummeted, hence these kinds of opportunities appearing.
