“More than 15 cases of pornographic content have been registered in Tilak Nagar police station of Maharashtra, in which your name is also there. Now you are under digital arrest. You are not supposed to talk to anyone until our investigation is complete. This case of pornographic content is very serious, for which you can be sentenced to three years and fined up to five lakhs.”… By saying such things, the cyber thug defrauded crores of rupees from a retired officer of Hindustan Copper Limited Company living in Mangal Colony of Ujjain.
The entire case is from Madhavnagar police station area. Ravindra Kulkarni (76), who lives in Mangal Colony, lives with his two sons. Kulkarni is a retired officer of Hindustan Copper Limited. He reached the police station and lodged a complaint that he received a WhatsApp call on his mobile on September 11. The person making this call told his name as Hemraj Kohli and identified himself as SI of Tilak Nagar Maharashtra police station.
As soon as Hemraj Kohli called Ravindra Kulkarni, he threatened him by saying that more than 15 cases of obscene content have been registered, in which your name is also included. When Ravindra Kulkarni said that he had no hand in any such case and that he was being falsely implicated, Hemraj Kohli told him that the entire matter will be investigated and asked him not to tell anyone about this.
Ravindra Kulkarni was so entangled in the fake SI's words that he did not tell anything about this to his sons and other family members for three days. Also, during this time, out of fear, he transferred 2 crore 55 lakh rupees from his wife's account to different accounts. After transferring the money, Hemraj Kohli's demand was increasing continuously. Even after receiving this money, he was threatening Ravindra Kulkarni that in such cases, there is a punishment of three years and a fine of five lakhs.
Ravindra Kulkarni told the police that between September 11 and September 13, he was under digital arrest at home. The person calling him sometimes threatened him with pornographic videos and sometimes in the name of money laundering. On September 13, after losing Rs 2 crore 55 lakh, Ravindra Kulkarni thought of going to the police and complaining about it, but he was so scared that it took him almost 9 days to complain about it and he reached Madhavnagar police station in a scared state and complained about it.
This is not the first incident of digital arrest. Even before this, many people have lost crores of rupees by getting trapped in this trap. Regarding this incident that happened with Ravindra Kulkarni, the police has registered a case and started investigation. SP Pradeep Sharma said that we have blocked Ravindra Kulkarni's other accounts, so that no more money can be withdrawn from his accounts. We have also advised our city residents not to fall prey to any kind of temptation.
