The Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced important rules related to the mega auction of IPL 2025 and the next season. The board announced this after the IPL Governing Council meeting on Saturday, September 28. As expected, this time the number of retention of players has been increased from 4 to 6, which was demanded by most of the franchises. Besides, this time the auction purse has also increased, while the payment of match fees has also started for the first time. Not only this, the board has also announced to crack down on those players who, despite being sold in the auction, withdraw their names just before the start of the season. Such players will be banned from participating in the tournament.

What are the big rules of IPL 2025 season?

  1. All franchises can now retain a total of 6 players from their existing squad. Out of these, only 5 players (Indian and foreign) can be capped, while maximum 2 players can be uncapped.
  2. Also, it will depend on the franchise as to how it wants to retain those 6 players. If the franchise wants, it can retain all the 6 players directly or can choose the option of 'Right to Match' (RTM) in the mega auction. Or you can retain some and buy the rest with right to match.
  3. Match fee has been introduced for the first time, under which every player in the playing eleven (as well as the impact player) will get Rs 7.5 lakh for playing a match. For this, the franchise will have to set aside Rs 12.60 crore per year, which will be separate from the auction purse.
  4. The auction purse has been increased from Rs 100 crore to Rs 120 crore. At the same time, the total salary cap (auction purse and incremental performance pay) has now increased from Rs 110 crore to Rs 146 crore. Of this, Rs 120 crore will be auction purse while Rs 12.60 crore will be match fee and the rest will be incremental performance pay. This salary cap will increase to Rs 151 crore in 2026 and to Rs 157 crore in 2027.
  5. Despite all the controversies, BCCI has decided to retain the impact player rule. Not only will this continue in the next season but it will also continue till the 2027 season.
  6. At the same time, in an attempt to earn more money, the foreign players who come only in the mini auction are also being cracked down on. Under the new rule, foreign players will also have to register for the mega auction. If he does not do this, he will not get a place in the next season's mini auction.
  7. Besides, BCCI has also taken action on the biggest complaint of the franchise owners and that is the withdrawal of players' names before the season. BCCI has made it clear that if any player, after being bought in the auction, withdraws his name before the start of the season, then he will be banned from participating in the auction as well as the tournament for the next two seasons.
  8. At the same time, if any capped Indian player (who has played or is playing international cricket) has not been a part of the playing eleven of any format in international cricket in the last 5 years or is not a part of the BCCI's central contract, then he is uncapped. Will be considered a player.
