Washington: In a statement released this morning, U.S. officials reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The remarks come in the wake of increased hostilities following recent clashes along the Israel-Gaza border, which have resulted in casualties on both sides.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the U.S. commitment to Israel’s security during a press briefing, stating, “Israel has the right to protect its citizens against acts of violence and terrorism.” This reiteration of support follows a series of rocket attacks launched from Gaza that have targeted civilian areas in southern Israel.

The situation has drawn widespread international concern, with calls for de-escalation and a return to dialogue. Blinken also urged all parties to exercise restraint, emphasizing the importance of protecting civilian lives. “We call on all sides to avoid further escalation and to work towards a peaceful resolution,” he added.

In response to the recent violence, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed gratitude for U.S. support, highlighting the importance of international backing in maintaining Israel’s security. “We will not stand idly by while our citizens are threatened,” Netanyahu declared.

The escalating situation has prompted discussions among U.N. member states regarding potential interventions to mediate the conflict. Humanitarian organizations have raised alarms about the impact of the ongoing violence on civilians, particularly in Gaza, where reports indicate growing shortages of essential supplies.

As tensions continue to mount, the international community remains on alert, closely monitoring developments in the region. Both sides face mounting pressure to seek a path toward peace, but the deep-rooted conflict presents significant challenges to achieving lasting stability.
