World Post Day 2024: Today is dedicated to the name of post i.e. Post Day is being celebrated all over the world to show its usefulness. In the age of messages, letters knock at the door even today, postmen on bicycles still go from door to door sending government documents and letters. As much as the importance of post remains intact in the world, the history of post in India, now 166 years old, remains glorious. When was the post office opened for the first time in India?

The first post office in India is traced to Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, where the first modern post office was opened in 1727, after which many changes took place in the coming years. In this, between 1774 and 1793, GPOs were opened in Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai Presidencies. It was there that the concept of India's first post office was laid on 1 October 1854, where it came closer to the people through post, banking, life insurance, money order or retail services. Indian Postal Department is said to be one of the oldest and important departments of the country, which is still useful even after completing 166 years.

This post office of Delhi is famous

The largest post office i.e. headquarters is located in the capital Delhi which is known as Gol Post Office with pin code number New Delhi 110001. This post office is called a heritage building whose history is old, till 1934 it was the Viceroy's Camp Post Office. After independence, in 1948 it got the status of Head Post Office or GPO. In fact, many important ministries including Parliament House, Supreme Court, Election Commission, Connaught Place and Pragati Maidan come under it and its history is quite old.

Being the post office headquarters, it looks very busy. Around 79 letter boxes have been installed within the limits of this post office. Also, 75 postmen deliver an average of 40 thousand letters every day in their respective beats, of which around 25 thousand are general letters. There are postal and the rest also include speed post or registry.

Posts are also made in the name of river and God.

In the post office, postmen post the names of not only humans but also Gods and rivers. For this, they go to many temples and distribute mails. Actually devotees of God send the mails by writing their wishes. Talking about the condition of the post office, 21 years ago he used to distribute 3 sacks of mail (one bag of 50 kg) daily in the Parliament House.

In recent years it has reduced to around one sack. You might not know that in the Postal Department there are people like Nobel Prize winner C.V. Raman, Munshi Premchand, Rajinder Singh Bedi, Devanand, Nirad C Chaudhary, Mahasweta Devi, Deenbandhu Mitra, Dogri writer Shivnath, Krishna Bihari Noor, Colonel Tilak Raj, Vishnu Swaroop Saxena. It has been recorded in the history of the Postal Department that hundreds of celebrities have worked as employees or officers in the Postal Department.
