Two-time World Superbike champion, Álvaro Bautista, has stated that he will not be able to assist his teammate Nicolò Bulega in the final round of the championship at Jerez, contrary to what happened in Estoril.
In a press conference, the Spanish Ducati rider fondly recalled the Andalusian circuit, the stage of his first 125cc victory in 2006 and where he won the WSBK title last year: ‘I have great memories of this place,’ revealed Bautista, who was keen to draw a parallel between his situation last year and his teammate’s current position: ‘In the past, I was at the final round with title chances, but I was in a different position. I was leading by a lot of points and it was easy to win the title,’ explained the Spanish rider. In contrast, he highlighted that Bulega faces a more challenging scenario: ‘It’s his first year in SBK and he’s second in the championship with a big points difference. Not everything depends on him; it depends on Toprak [Razgatlioglu]’s results.’ Regarding the possibilities of helping his teammate, Bautista was direct: ‘On Saturday, if nothing strange happens, the difference will be very big and Toprak could be champion. Here, I can’t help Bulega.’ The Spanish rider explained that the situation is different from what happened at Estoril, where he was able to contribute to minimizing Bulega’s points loss. Bautista concluded by expressing his intention to fight for victory if possible, but without compromising his performance based on the championship situation: ‘In the same situation as Estoril, I can attack Nicolò because, even being second, he has less chance of the title,’ he said, adding that he will be satisfied as long as he can give his best in all races.
