The de facto leader of Hamas Yahya Sinwar was leading Hamas from February 2017 onwards. He became the acting chief of Hamas in July following the assassination of former leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran.

His leadership was based on aggression rather than diplomacy, as he was the important person to shut down peace talks with Israel, and Sinwar also claimed that Hamas was very close to eliminating the Jewish state, as specified in the New York Post.
