Referee forced to apologise to Hull City manager after Sunderland controversy

Wilson Isidor’s wonder strike sent Sunderland back top of the Championship but left Hull fuming.

The pacey French forward, on loan from Zenit St Petersburg, scored his third goal in four games as the Black Cats landed another win.

He raced 60m from inside his own half as the visitors countered from a Hull corner, calmly holding off Cody Drameh before cooly lifting the ball over Ivor Pandur.

But City were furious about the thrilling 63rd minute winner as they claimed referee Robert Madley got in the way of midfielder Marvin Mehlem at the start of the play.

Defender Alfie Jones earned a yellow card for complaining too much. But Tigers chief Tim Walter fired: “Maybe you could interview the referee. It’d be better [than my thoughts].

“It’s really frustrating. He apologised afterwards for the situation but that doesn’t help us. He said he was well prepared. If he was, he’d know we play a lot of situations [at corners] short.

“He said he was well prepared but if you don’t find the right position in this case maybe you are not well prepared. One hundred percent we could do better [in defending Isidor] but sometimes it’s not our mistake.

“There was also a clear handball. He [Chris Mepham] handled it back to the keeper. For me it’s a red card We have to accept it. But it’s like a neverending story.”

Hull were incensed just before half-time when the Black Cats centre-half handled Jones’ long, diagonal ball to deny a chance for Gustavo Puerta.

did most of the pressing in the first half but created few clear-cut opportunities. Hull, who had won three of their last four games, looked more dangerous on the counter-attack via Chris Bedia, Mohamed Belloumi and Abu Kamara.

But either their final pass wasn’t up to scratch or the outstanding Mepham recovered to deal with the situation. Hull’s first real opportunity came in the 52nd minute when Belloumi curled a left-footed shot just over from the edge of the penalty area.

Soon after, Bedia rifled a shot that rattled the bar before Anthony Patterson made a spectacular save as Cirkin slid into deny Belloumi and the ball ricocheted goalwards from 25m.

But Sunderland hit them on the counter from the resulting corner and there was no way back. Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris admitted: “Wilson [Isidor] has that quality to eat the space.

“He can run and run and run. He kept the consistency to beat the keeper as well. It was a brilliant goal. There’s still a question of confidence for him but he wants to improve and has many qualities. He made the difference today.

“I can’t judge the referee’s position or involvement because that’s not my priority.”
