British travellers heading to Italy have been cautioned about severe weather conditions and potential flooding after heavy rainfall lashed parts of the country over the weekend.

The UK (FCDO) issued an update urging Brits to check with tour operators before departure and to follow instructions from local authorities closely.

The storms have particularly affected the regions of in northern Italy and Liguria in the northwest.

Heavy rainfall has swept across central France and into parts of Italy, with storms expected to persist in southern regions until Tuesday, according to Euronews.

The most serious impact has been felt in Emilia Romagna, where one person tragically died after floodwaters swept away their car.

The Italian army has been deployed to Castel Maggiore to assist the Fire Department and Civil Protection teams in rescuing stranded residents.

The situation remains critical as more rain is forecasted.

With the October half-term holidays beginning, the timing of the weather alerts may affect many British families heading abroad.

The FCDO's advisory stated, "Severe weather and flooding are affecting many areas of Italy, particularly Emilia Romagna and Liguria.

Rail services and roads may be affected." It also advised travellers to stay informed by checking with local authorities and visiting official websites for updates.

The Italian Civil Protection Department and Ferrovie dello Stato, the national rail operator, provide information on travel disruptions, though some updates are available only in Italian.
