Onion Price Hike: First tomato, now onion prices are going out of control. The price of green vegetables is also on the rise, but onion is making people cry due to inflation. Onion is being sold at the price of 60 to 80 rupees per kg in the retail market. To control the rising prices of onion in the capital Delhi and its surrounding areas, the government announced to run Kanda Express. It was decided to run trains loaded with onions, but it does not seem that there will be any relief from onion prices now.

When will we get relief from expensive onions?

The price of onion in Delhi and its surrounding areas has reached 60 to 80 rupees per kg. There is no hope of relief from the rising price of onion at the moment. Heavy rains in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh may further increase the price of onion. There is no hope of relief in the coming days in the prices of onion which are under the impact of weather.

Weather damages onions

People were hoping that there could be relief from the rising prices of onion after Diwali, but there are less chances of this. Due to the rains in onion producing states, crops are suffering heavy losses. Due to the damage to crops and the disruption in the supply chain, the prices of onion, tomato, cooking oil have increased inflation. If we look at the wholesale price of onion, its price in Nashik has reached 45 to 50 rupees per kilogram. It was expected that the prices would come down with the arrival of Kharif crop, but due to the delay in the crop due to rain, there is a delay in getting relief in the price. Due to waterlogging in the fields, the cultivation of onion crops is getting delayed by 10 to 15 days. First in Maharashtra and then in South India, onion fields are getting delayed due to rain.

To control the prices, the government has started releasing the buffer stock. Kanda Express train is being run from Nashik to Delhi. A special goods train loaded with 1,600 tonnes of onions has been sent to Delhi from Nashik in Maharashtra. It is believed that the arrival of this train may provide some relief to Delhi and NCR from expensive onions a few days before Diwali.
