Although many smartphones are still running on Bluetooth 5.0, tech companies have prepared for Bluetooth 6.0. Almost every year the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) releases a new version of the technology. Currently, people are using Bluetooth v5.4, but Bluetooth SIG has already published the specifications of the new version v6.0. This means that we may soon see Bluetooth 6.0 in flagship devices launched in the coming weeks. Bluetooth 6.0 includes features such as channel sounding, decision-based ad filtering, and monitoring of advertisers.
Based on the specifications published by Bluetooth SIG, most of the changes are "behind the scenes", which do not directly interact with users, although for device manufacturers and software developers, these changes can improve Bluetooth connection stability, data speed, and battery life.
The biggest change that comes with Bluetooth 6.0 is "Channel Sounding", a feature that helps give Bluetooth real stability. This feature allows Bluetooth to receive real-time distance information, which can bring big improvements in many areas. For example, it will make it faster and easier to find lost items with tools like "Find Me".
Another feature of Bluetooth 6.0 is Decision-Based Ad Filtering. This feature is not about online ads but is related to the way Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) signals are recognized. This allows the device to decide whether it should look for more related data after receiving a data packet. This reduces data loss and speeds up the process by saving data from downloading again and again.
Data transfer delays will also be reduced with Bluetooth 6.0, which includes the "Isochronous Adaptation Layer Enhancement" feature, which allows large data to be split into smaller packets, making faster transfers possible. The feature also includes a new mode to reduce latency based on data organization.
