Chennai weather alert
Chennai and nearby 11 coastal districts in Tamil Nadu are set to receive heavy rainfall on Thursday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which has issued a yellow alert for Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, and several other districts. Heavy rainfall, between 6 cm and 12 cm over 24 hours, is expected across these areas due to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal.

Cyclonic circulation to bring heavy rainfall

Meteorologists attribute the heavy rainfall to a cyclonic circulation positioned over central parts of the south Bay of Bengal. The circulation extends up to 3.1 km above sea level, while strengthening easterly winds are driving rainfall toward the region.

The IMD predicts heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai, and Ramanathapuram on Thursday, while heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted from November 8-12 in several districts, including Theni, Dindigul, and Kanyakumari. The IMD forecasts a maximum temperature of 32°C and a minimum temperature of 24°C in Chennai over the next 48 hours.

"There is also a north-south trough extending from the cyclonic circulation, which will bring rainfall to the city," said N Senthamarai Kannan, director of the IMD’s regional weather forecasting center. "There could be moderate to heavy rainfall in one or two places in the city on Thursday. Thereafter, rain activity may continue for at least four days in the city, but it may be of light to moderate intensity. When it comes to circulation, it is hard to say whether the rainfall will be during the day or night."

Rain forecast for the coming days

The IMD predicts moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning across Chennai and its suburbs for the next 48 hours. The temperature is expected to remain around 31-32°C during the day and 24-25°C at night.

In addition to Chennai, districts such as Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Nagapattinam are also likely to see heavy rainfall on Thursday. On Friday, other districts like Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, and Kanyakumari are expected to experience isolated heavy rains.

IMD issues coastal and delta district warnings

Warnings for heavy rainfall have been extended to 15 coastal and delta districts for November 9 and 10, with a separate alert for seven districts on November 12.

Local weather blogger Pradeep John noted that rainfall in Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur is likely to continue for two more days before shifting toward the southern coastal districts. "Morning rainfall will be back for coastal districts from Chennai to delta," he mentioned in a recent blog post.

Fishermen have been advised against venturing out to sea until November 9 due to anticipated squally winds, with speeds reaching 35-45 kmph and gusts up to 55 kmph in certain coastal areas near the southwest Bay of Bengal.

Rising Water Levels in Vaigai Dam

Due to recent rains, water levels in the Vaigai Dam are rising. The current water level stands at 64.34 feet, nearing the full capacity of 71 feet. Officials from the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department indicated that the first flood warning will be issued at 66 feet, with additional warnings as levels approach maximum capacity. If necessary, water will be released to irrigate farmlands in the Madurai district.
