At the draw held here on Thursday, it was announced that 2020 champion Daniil Medvedev and top seed Jannik Sinner will play in the same group for the ATP Finals. They will be joined in the Ilie Nastase Group by tournament rookie Alex de Minaur and fifth seed Taylor Fritz.
The John Newcombe Group, which also includes 2022 Turin finalist Casper Ruud and five-time qualifier Andrey Rublev, will be headlined by second seed Alexander Zverev and this year’s Roland Garros and Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz.
As the top seed and No. 1 player in the ATP Rankings, home favorite Sinner will attempt to go further in this edition after making a remarkable run to the final match in front of his home crowd at the Inalpi Arena last year. Out of the eight singles players, two have already won the title. In the sport, Zverev (2018, 2021) and Medvedev (2020) have both won the ultimate title.
Both Sinner and Medvedev took to the courts on Thursday before to the announcement of the draw. After arriving in Turin, former ATP Finals winner Novak Medvedev took center court at the Inalpi Arena to intensify his training for the esteemed year-end tournament.
He practiced with Norwegian 18-year-old Nicolai Budkov Kjaer in front of a group of Italian youths, and he seemed at ease as the fourth-ranked player in the ATP Rankings. Medvedev is participating in the ATP Finals for the sixth time in a row after winning there in 2020. The 28-year-old has a 45-19 season record going into Turin.
Sinner, an Italian star, also shown his ability to adapt to the situation on Thursday when he sparred with Andres Martin, an American. The World No. 1 will be keen to advance this time around after losing to Novak Djokovic in the title round in Turin last year.
