La Paz: Two opposition figures connected to former President Evo Morales have been detained by Bolivian police on suspicion of terrorism and other offenses.
According to the Xinhua news agency, peasant leaders Humberto Claros and Ramiro Cucho were taken into custody on Wednesday on suspicion of encouraging a revolt and sent to La Paz.
As part of an investigation into suspected acts of terrorism, police also searched the home of former Minister of the Presidency Juan Ramon Quintana, but they were unable to apprehend him.
The arrests, according to Morales and other anti-government political figures, are “repression” and “political kidnapping,” and the incarceration is an assault on the right to demonstrate.
According to the police, the nation suffered multimillion-dollar damages as a result of the recent rallies staged by the opposition that shut down roads for 24 days.
