The Uttar Pradesh government’s cabinet minister, Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi’, lost Rs 2.08 crore to cybercriminals on Friday when his accountant fell victim to the scam. Without confirming the minister’s son’s WhatsApp number, Ritesh Srivastava sent the money to the con artists. Together with the criminal section, two teams from the cyber police station have been sent to the scene to conduct an investigation.
The police requested details on the bank accounts where the money was moved and gave the bank executives instructions to freeze the relevant bank accounts in an email. According to the reports, the police have some information regarding the bank account and the cyberthugs. Nevertheless, no formal comment about the matter has been issued by the authorities.
Two days before the event, the scammers posted a photo of Nandi’s kid on WhatsApp. Using the same phone number, they sent Ritesh a message demanding the money. “I have an essential meeting that could go longer than expected. The message said, “I need the money immediately.” The account information where the money was to be moved was supplied by the goons. Ritesh sent the money without checking the bank account and phone number information, only to discover later that he had been duped by the scammers.
