‘Bridgerton’ star Luke Newton, who plays the endearing Colin Bridgerton, is sharing behind-the-scenes photos of his physical makeover for the third season of the popular Netflix series.

Newton recently discussed his approach to playing the lead and the factors that influenced his character’s new, muscular appearance in an interview with People magazine.

Newton is aware that he must represent the emotional and physical development of Colin Bridgerton as he sets out on a quest to discover enduring love with his longtime friend Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan).
Newton clarified that “Colin had changed and become a man,” and that “I wanted to embody that physically.”

Newton concentrated on developing a stronger, more muscular body in order to accomplish this change.
But going to the gym wasn’t the only thing. When it came to grooming, the actor also took cues from his on-screen brother, Anthony Bridgerton (played by Jonathan Bailey). Newton said, “We were very, very proud of those,” alluding to the characteristic sideburns he wore throughout the season.

“It took us hours to really work those out, work out the exact shape, the line that we wanted,” he said.
Newton liked the way Bailey’s character from the previous season had well-groomed sideburns that seemed mature and well-defined. In order to support his character’s development into masculinity, he sought to imitate that appearance.

Newton acknowledges, however, that his fashionable sideburns weren’t always appropriate for his daily appearance.

In the interview with People magazine, he joked, “The only thing is in normal life, it didn’t really go with anything.” He also said, “If you see those sideys, you can kind of spot a Bridgerton from a mile away if I’m in the coffee shop on a Sunday morning!”

In addition to the physical changes, Newton spoke on the emotional toll of portraying Colin in the third season, especially in a crucial sequence when Colin discovers that Penelope is really the notorious gossip columnist Lady Whistledown’s hidden identity.

When Newton read the screenplay, he saw right away how profoundly this discovery would impact his character, even though he was unaware it was coming in the plot.

“I was aware that it was the thing that would most likely break him. “This will hurt him more than anyone else in the entire ‘Bridgerton’ universe,” he remarked.

One of the hardest scenes for Newton to depict was this one, which was filmed in a range of emotional tones.
He remembered, “I remember just bawling my eyes out,” adding that it was originally intended to be pretty nasty and aggressive. After that, it seemed really emotional given the history of these roles that we had essentially sat in for all these years.

Newton was thankful to have Nicola Coughlan on board to help bring their characters’ friends-to-lovers plotline to life during shooting this heartbreaking scene.

Newton said, “It was natural,” considering their mutual chemistry. “That didn’t need to be ignited by us. These characteristics seemed to have developed over a considerable amount of time.

“We just went for it,” Coughlan, who portrays Penelope, continued in the People magazine interview.
The relationship between Colin and Penelope in real life improved the interaction between the two performers.
“It felt like a real safe space to explore these scenes and find new and interesting ways,” Newton said.

He underlined that although the show’s sultry love scenes were a necessary component of Colin and Penelope’s romance, they also sought to convey the humor and nuanced nature of their bond.

“We wanted to really encapsulate the Colin and Pen love story– their humour, and all these different genres their relationship showcases,” Newton said.
