Argentina's national football team faced a surprising 2-1 loss to Paraguay in their World Cup qualifying match. Despite the setback, coach Lionel Scaloni refrained from criticising his players.
Lautaro Martinez initially put Argentina ahead with a powerful shot in the 11th minute, which was initially disallowed for offside but later confirmed after a VAR review. Paraguay quickly responded, equalising with an impressive overhead kick by Antonio Sanabria in the 19th minute. Omar Alderete then completed the comeback two minutes into the second half, heading in Diego Gomez's precise free-kick. Despite Argentina's efforts, including a missed opportunity by Rodrigo De Paul, they couldn't secure a draw. Scaloni remained optimistic despite this being Argentina's third defeat in World Cup qualifying. "I'm not here to criticise my players; I'm here to support them," he stated. He acknowledged the challenge of the match and emphasised moving forward positively.
Scaloni praised his team's effort, noting their resilience and determination to compete. "The team always tries and stands tall," he said. He also commended Paraguay for their strong defensive play and acknowledged that they made it difficult for Argentina to find solutions. Paraguay managed only 23.2% possession but were efficient with their chances, scoring both shots on target out of eight attempts compared to Argentina's nine. This victory extended Paraguay's unbeaten streak to six matches, including a win over Brazil. Gustavo Alfaro's Impact on Paraguay Since taking charge after the Copa America, Paraguay's coach Gustavo Alfaro has yet to experience defeat. He praised his team's tenacity and spirit during challenging moments. "With the rebelliousness of these players in the face of adversity, I have no doubt that we will get there," Alfaro remarked. The coach highlighted how difficult it is to earn points against Argentina and expressed confidence in his team's future prospects. This match demonstrated both teams' strengths and challenges as they continue their journey in World Cup qualifying. While Argentina remains at the top of the standings with 22 points, Paraguay is proving to be a formidable opponent under new management.
