Gandhinagar. A first year student of a medical college in Gujarat has died. He was allegedly forced to stand for 3 hours as part of ragging by seniors. This incident has created a stir in the college as well as the district administration.
According to information, MBBS student Anil Methania was one of the many first-year students who took admission in GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Dharpur Patan this year. It is alleged that third-year students in the hostel made Anil Methania stand for 3 hours continuously for "introduction".
"Parichay" is a word often used for ragging activities in medical college residential complexes, in which seniors harass new students. It is alleged that Anil fainted after standing for 3 hours and fell there. He was immediately admitted to the hospital. When he regained consciousness, he recorded a statement before the police that he was forced to stand for 3 hours. He died soon after recording the statement. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Its report is awaited, as its report is likely to provide more information about the cause of death.
Anil's cousin Dharmendra said that his family lives in Surendranagar district of Gujarat, more than 150 km away from the college in Patan. He said that yesterday we got a call from the college and were told that Anil fainted and he has been admitted to the hospital. When we reached here, we came to know that third year students had ragged him. We want justice." Hardik Shah, Dean of the medical college, says that as soon as we came to know that he fainted, we admitted him to the hospital. He told the police that he was ragged and made to stand for 3 hours. We have informed the police and the family and will try to take strict action.
According to senior police officer KK Pandya, the student's father has lodged a complaint and a case of accidental death has been registered. "The post-mortem has been conducted and medical reports have been sought on the incident. Based on the findings, we will take further action," he said. When asked about the ragging aspect, the senior officer said, "We have sought detailed information from the college on this point too." Higher education regulator University Grants Commission has banned all forms of ragging on educational campuses and affiliated institutions have been asked to take strict action against those found guilty of indulging in ragging or abetting ragging.
