Talking about the match, Australia won the toss and chose to bowl first in a surprise call that proved a masterstroke. Despite a quick-fire knock of 47 in 31 balls by Rohit Sharma and half-centuries from Virat Kohli (54 in 53 balls) and KL Rahul (66 in 107 balls), India managed to post a total of just 240 on the board.A brilliant new ball spell by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami ensured Australia lost three early wickets, but Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne's 188-run partnership for the fourth wicket took the game away from India. This was the second time in history that India lost the final of the competition after a defeat against Ricky Ponting's Australian team in 2003 at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. India also became only the second home team in history to lose a final after England in 1979. A few months later, India completed an incredible redemption by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup in another flawless campaign with seven wins in as many matches.
