A law student was gang-raped by her boyfriend and three others in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam on August 13, this year.
The act was filmed by the accused, who threatened the survivor with dire consequences if she complained about the matter.
Being harassed for days, the survivor attempted suicide. However, she was saved by her father.
The case came to light on Wednesday morning after the YSR Congress Party, in an X post, tagged Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Anitha Vangalapudi and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan.
“A law student was gang-raped by four youths in Visakhapatnam. The atrocity was filmed on a cell phone and the victim was threatened many times. The victim tried to commit suicide because she could not stop the harassment of the accused. The father saved her," a rough translation of the party’s post in regional language suggested.
“How many more girls should be victimized by the incompetence of the coalition government," the party asked, tagging Vangalapudi and Kalyan.
Hours later, the Visakhapatnam City Police tagged multiple media reports on X, confirming the arrest of the four accused in the case.
The four accused were identified as Batha Vamsi (27), Boddu Jagdish (27), Polipalli Anand (28), and Davulapalli Rajesh (23), a report with The New Indian Express stated.
Three of the accused were identified as final year LLB students and part-time workers, while the fourth one was full-time employed, it stated.
The survivor is also a final-year LLB student and has been in a relationship with her boyfriend for a year.
The incident happened after the woman’s boyfriend took her to a friend’s room where they both were filmed by the other three accused. The three others then shared the video with Vamsi (the woman’s boyfriend), after which the four sexually harassed the woman multiple times, threatening her with leaking the videos, the report stated.
As the police complaint was filed, the accused were arrested under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), it said.
